Perfectly persevered and seeping history from every wall, Isla Lazareto is located in the Port of Mahón. This fascinating island was once a peninsula that later broke off and became in island in the port. Over the years the island has been used for many different functions including as a quarantine until 1771 for potentially infected sailors bringing goods into the port, many goods were shipped to Mahon via countries where chronic infectious diseases in particular the plague were present. It was used as a place of quarantine up until the end of the 1st World War.
It’s an intriguingly unique place to explore, delve into the history and take photos before relaxing and mingling with other attendees over cocktails.
