13 UNIQUE LATVIAN FOODS AND DRINKS YOU SHOULD TRY IN 2021

Cold countries with tough climates and rugged landscapes have a wonderful habit of developing hearty cuisines made from belly-filling carbohydrates and meats, as well as a love of forest-floor foraging. Latvia is no different. This Baltic country’s cuisine is full of good fish and mushrooms, with a penchant for pickling everything. These are the hearty Latvian foods and iconic drinks to enjoy by the fireside with friends.

LATVIA FOR NATURE LOVERS // UNMISSABLE PLACES TO VISIT

Latvia is the perfect destination if you are looking for escapism in nature. It has a population fewer than 2 million and is one of the three countries that make up the Baltics. Riga, the lively capital of Latvia, is a destination that is on most travellers’ lists. However, there is so much more to see and do in Latvia outside of this beautiful city.

HIKING IN LATVIA: WHERE TO FIND THE BEST TRAILS

Latvia is an ideal way to explore a land of peaceful lakes, fairytale forests and exceptionally unspoilt countryside Latvia is perhaps best known for the cosmopolitan city of Riga. Beyond the clamorous capital, however, lie delightful small towns like Cēsis and Sigulda that offer hiking, cycling, canoeing and myriad other outdoor adventures. Considering its size, the little Baltic nation dedicates a surprising amount of space to outdoor pursuits. The white-sand beaches of its coast are the biggest draw, particularly during the summer.

WHAT TO DO IN SIGULDA - THE NATURE BOUND DAY TRIP FROM RIGA

Sigulda, Latvia is a town granted the status as one of the most beautiful in the country. Found in the Vidzeme Region, less than an hour from the capital of Riga, Sigulda rests on Gauja National Park’s valley edge; an elevated outer-city hideaway hugged by dense forests famed for their spectacular colour change to fiery hues in autumn, filled with rocky cliff faces and caves of ochre red sandstone, and fed by the tributaries of the Gauja River.

LATVIA – A JOURNEY BY PLATE (INCLUDES 2 TASTY RECIPES)

Three of my greatest passions in life go hand in hand; food, travel and storytelling. I’ve gone to ridiculous lengths of the years for delicious meals – nipped over to Paris for lunch, traipsed to 3 countries for 3 meals (well, I say traipsed, I really mean caught the tram), sat on a train for an hour just to get my hands on a proper Kiwi pie… I could go on, but your eyes would cross and my bounce rate would skyrocket. This time I only had to wander to my laptop. No passport necessary.

Twitter Facebook Pinterest Email When you ask me where to go in Europe that’s a cool city to visit for a few days — somewhere a bit off the beaten path, but not TOO off the beaten path — that’s when I start talking about Riga, Latvia. As a Latvian-American, I have a soft spot for Riga. In 2015 I finally visited Latvia with my mother and sister, more than 100 years since my great-grandfather left Riga for a better life in Canada and, later, the United States.

DISCOVER LATVIA

Latvia is an Eastern European country on the Baltic Sea between Lithuania and Estonia. It is a small and friendly country with 2 million inhabitants, a third of which reside in its capital, Riga. For those more budget conscious travellers, Latvia is much cheaper than some of its European counterparts. Latvia is surrounded by countryside and water with over 15,000 rivers and small lakes. It also has its fair share of sandy beaches and beautiful waterfalls. One of the biggest parts of Latvian culture is their love for folk music, which I certainly witnessed in the capital, Riga. We thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing along!

MY VIRTUAL TRIP TO LATVIA

Ah the travelling story of 2020, virtual trips. Thank goodness for them or else I wouldn’t have seen much of the world at all this year. My latest one was the #TasteofLatvia Christmas party with a cookalong and Latvian folk performance hosted by Traverse Events and the Latvian tourist board Magnetic Latvia to celebrate all things Latvian.

WHAT TO EAT IN RIGA: LATVIAN FOOD IN RIGA YOU HAVE TO TRY

Latvian food has developed its own unique style, taking influence from its history with and proximity to Russia, Germany and its Baltic neighbours. Pork is the most common meat in Latvian cuisine, appearing in various forms from breaded cutlets to the speck (bacon) that adds flavour and protein to otherwise vegetarian dishes. Fish is also popular, as Latvians enjoy the spoils of a long coastline and rivers running through the country.

A TASTE OF LATVIAN FOOD: LAYERED RYE BREAD DESSERT

Despite it being almost a whole year since I last stepped foot outside the UK, recently I was lucky enough to dip my toes into an entirely new cuisine, when Traverse Events invited me to join them for a virtual Christmas party and cookalong with Magnetic Latvia. We were joined by Latvian celebrity chef and restaurauteur, Mārtiņš Sirmais, with the soundtrack to the evening provided by Latvian folk singer and former Eurovision contestant, Katrīna Dimanta.
